Rafael Mendez-Crouch

Rafael Mendez-Crouch (@chefrafaelmc) was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to Venezuelan and Trinidadian immigrants and raised in a lively Hispanic-Caribbean household where food was basically its own love language. A first-generation American, Rafael enlisted in the United States Marine Corps before 9/11 and served on active duty for more than a decade, working in intelligence and training Marines in hand-to-hand combat as a black-belt martial arts instructor. He is a proud combat veteran. His service took him around the world, where he developed a deep appreciation for culture, flavor, and the universal truth that every country swears they make the best street food. After leaving the Marines, Rafael explored careers in finance, fitness, and hospitality management, but none felt quite right. During the COVID pandemic, while home caring for his young son, Mason, he discovered how much joy cooking brought to others, and how fulfilling it felt to create something that brought people together (and how quickly kids will eat your mise en place). Rafael dove into cooking professionally, refining his craft working alongside Michelin-starred chefs and continually honing his skills and techniques, guided by the same principles of purpose, precision, resilience and passion for service that shaped his military career. He is currently developing a restaurant concept (@favoritesonstpa) with his brother-in-law, which he hopes to debut in 2026. Rafael lives in Tampa, Florida, with his wife, Alexis, their son, Mason, and their dog, Hugo.
