šŸ‘‹šŸ½ Hello There

Remember how I said I was planning to travel less this year?

Well…

Well See GIF by Saturday Night Live

That’s also why I said planning to as we all know plans change. Plus according to my house numerology, I should expect adventure, change and travel which has been accurate so it’s meant to be. I’ve recently discovered Sasha Keable and why didn’t anyone tell me about her? Just kidding, that’s why you subscribe to this newsletter so I can tell you these things. To me, if Adele did a Neo-soul kind of sound, that’s Sasha.

Random Things That I’ve Been Thinking About:

  • I saw this quote and of course my sappy self teared up reading it: ā€˜What is grief if not love persevering’.

  • Now I feel old cause I saw a video about rap songs from the 2001 and midway through I was like…they don’t make music like they used to

  • Recently found out Ken Leung who I love in Industry played the peroxide blonde villain in Rush Hour

  • I know men can be šŸ‘€šŸ«£ but falling in love with ChatGPT šŸ„²šŸ˜…šŸ˜ She Fell in Love With ChatGPT. Like, Actual Love. With Sex. In the words of Gwen Stefani: This sh*t is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S. But you know what’s also bananas? THERE ARE BLACK HOLES IN THE OCEAN!!

What terrifies you more the ocean or space?

Here are some of my favorite things right now.

As I’ve started shopping at Sprouts again, it reminded me of when I first moved to LA. I would ā€˜treat’ myself and splurge on these cheese and crackers snack packs. And now they are something that I can grab whenever I like. Very appreciative of the growth I’ve been able to and will continue to have in how I live my life.

Incase you’ve been busy, this is a reminder that it’s my birth month so feel free to send me flowers! Which is perfect timing with this month’s guest columnist, Whit McClure of Whit Hazen, one of my favorite floral design studios in Los Angeles.

See you in two weeks when I’ll be a year older but maybe not wiser šŸ™‚

What’s Inspiring Me Outside of My Flower-Filled Word by Whit McClure

Hi mewd. by mikala readers! This is Whit of Whit Hazen.  I’m a floral designer and artist, and I’m honored to be the guest for this week’s newsletter.  Below you’ll find links to some of the things that are inspiring me outside of my flower-filled world.   If you love flowers and enjoy the vibes below, you can keep in touch with me on IG @whit_hazen and through my newsletter Behind the Flowers (sign up on my website!).

Preserved Lemon Supremacy

It’s still citrus season, but before it ends, you have got to try preserving lemons.  My sister put me onto these over a decade ago, and this time every year, I make sure to take advantage of the local meyer lemon bounty to make some at home. Seriously, anytime a dish calls for lemon, try swapping fresh lemon for some preserved lemons and your palette will be forever changed.  A little goes a long way, and while there is an initial time investment, they’ll keep in your fridge for a year. I love Nasim’s how -to video for making them here .

Interrogate Everything

I recently came across this podcast called Interrogate Everything with Nikki Blak, and as someone who identifies as an optimist & skeptic, I knew I was their target audience. The first episode that I listened to was Episode 8: Interrupting Consumerism with Aja Barber, a well-known sustainable fashion advocate and writer.  One of the many gems that Aja mentioned is that if you don’t see yourself wearing it for the next ten years, you don’t need it! It made me think about my own closet and how many of my most worn and loved clothes are items that I’ve had for that long (or longer). Highly recommended listening if you’re someone who is looking to do better.

The Dream Girls are Winging It

At this time of year, LA finds itself in a flurry of new art exhibit openings, thanks to the Frieze, Felix, and Post Art Fairs.  Among these, I was very excited to catch the new Nina Chanel Abney and Tschabalala Self exhibits at Jeffrey Deitch in Hollywood.   I’m a big fan of Abney’s work- it’s vibrant & captivating- and ā€œWinging Itā€  allows you to immerse yourself in her playful and technicolor mind as she delves into themes of religion, community, and the commercialization of our world. Up the street is Self’s ā€œDream Girlsā€, showcasing large-scale paintings & sculpture by Tschabalala Self. Exploring the construction of femininity, I loved the tactility of her paintings through the use of paint, fabric, and assemblage.  While their styles are very different, both Abney & Self’s art practices include an element of collage that I really loved witnessing back to back.  Up until April 26th at Jeffrey Deitch Los Angeles

Re:  Intentional Shopping

People rarely guess my age, and I have wondered if it is because of my youthful spirit, my penchant for drinking water and minding my business,  or because of the way I dress (probably d) all of the above!). At one point in my nascent adulthood, I remember wondering if there would ever come a time where wearing black hoodies would be considered juvenile, but as the millennial generation has matured, I am ecstatic to report that that has not been the case!

In our polyester world, I love a heavyweight cotton hoodie, but finding a 100% cotton one is hard!  Then in my search I came across the brand Elwood and their annual release of 100% heavy weight cotton hoodies and sweats.  I recently grabbed a hoodie & pair of pants in black and am in love. They release them once a year and appear to just have their color Pearl still available, which would look very chic.   This is definitely a set that I will be wearing for the next 10+ years. When they inevitably get faded or stained, I’ll just grab a bottle of Rit dye and they’ll be as good as new.

Whit McClure is the creative mind & muscle behind WHIT HAZEN, a floral design studio that specializes in artful & unique designs and experiences.  With the philosophy that flowers are both a reflection of the greater world around us & our own interiority, Whit Hazen sources the exquisite blooms to capture and showcase the beauty of this ephemeral medium to to convey messages of hope, joy, luxury, pleasure, resistance, and love in all of its forms.

Whit Hazen has been featured across print and film and is a sought after design studio for creative clients, innovative companies, and mission-driven organizations alike.

IN THE ā€˜MEWD’ FOR..

MUSIC

So Close to What by Tate McRae — I’d describe Tate as a Britney Spears sun, Willa Ford rising and venus in Christina Aguilera. This album is cute and fun plus everything you want from a not so bubblegum pop album

Token of Appreciation by Boldy James & Chuck Strangers - This album is the album where you get in the car to just cruise and vibe to forget everything going on. If you’re a fan of Mobb Deep, A Tribe Called Quest, Scarface or Larry June give this album a listen

Alter Ego by Lisa - This album made me think of Christina Aguilera’s Stripped but mainly the song ā€˜Dirty.’ As with this album, Lisa going to be who she is and if you don’t like it that’s a you problem and mentions this briefly in her song with Future. Good album to listen while getting ready to go out

LOVE.JONES by They. - LOVE.JONES gives me old school 90s/early 2000s r&b i.e. 112, Dru Hill or Jodeci (who they mention in ā€˜Straight Up’). This album works great when you are in the feels/wanna vibe in a super chill way, before a date or want to set the mood during one. It’s less than 30 minutes though for the album so 🤨🫤 on that

Other albums I’m Giving a Listen To:

Ruby (Jennie), Mayhem (Lady Gaga) and Anti-People Pleaser, Pt. 1 - EP (Chace)

Anxiety by Doechii — Power of TikTok is wild as this song was never complete until it was released on Friday. In the TikTok trend, it took a sample of this unfinished (at the time) song and paired it with recreating a scene from Fresh Prince of Bel Air to create a viral moment that led to the sample of ā€˜Somebody I Used to Know’ to finally be cleared so Doechii could finish the song and release it. P.S. have you seen all the ~lewks~ Doechii has been bringing to PFW? If not, run to Google

If You Hadn’t Been There by Dolly Parton — Dolly Rebecca Parton. šŸ„ŗšŸ˜šŸ˜šŸ«¶šŸ½. I don’t need to say more than this

Other Songs I’m Enjoying:

Gethsemane (Car Seat Headrest), Blest (Yuno), No Gravity (Kyle Dixon)

BEAUTY

I’m sure this routine looks to be an expensive routine at first thought, and it is, but I’m strategic with my purchases. I stock up when traveling via CDG for CaudalĆe because it’s so much cheaper in France and then restock during the Sephora sale or when I catch other items on sale. I’m sure there are non-expensive items that can give you similar results but that’s not my lane so I’ll leave it you to do further research. Also, I go see Sora for my facials but I’m not a regular cadence with that as of today
