VOLUME 2 - ISSUE 10: May 6, 2024

šŸ‘‹šŸ½ Hello There

I won’t lie, it took me forever to start this issue because of the Kendrick Lamar and Drake disses going back and forth. Makes me think of church (black churches specifically) when you think the service is over but it’s still going. Regardless, on how you feel about rap music; Kendrick is a Pulitzer Prize-winning rapper who has many layers to his diss songs from the musicality to wordplay. Like using a track that Drake’s uncle played guitar on to diss him is new levels of petty, I haven’t even gotten to. Meanwhile, Drake started off somewhat strong but not sure what’s going on now. He usually gives the diss track bops that help him win public opinion. Christian Divyne (xiandivyne) and Pablo (Pablothedon) are two of the many people that have been giving great breakdowns but enough about that.

Actually one more thing, this beef reminded me of trolling 50 Cent did when he was beefing with Ja Rule, which Ja Rule’s career never really recovered from that. Probably why he found himself associated with the scam that was Fyre Fest.

Currently listening to Katt Williams live on Netflix which makes me think of his interview at the beginning of the year. And that interview was WILLDDDD. He did say it was a year of truths and a lot of truths have been coming out lately.

I’ve been putting my AMC movie pass to good use and saw Challengers and Civil War recently. Enjoyed both for different reasons.

With Challengers to sum it up I would say sex, lies, and tennis. It gave a lovely lesson on the 5 C’s of storytelling and when done right it gives just the right impact on how a story is perceived. The music worked well in each scene and with the ending scene, it put a smile on my face. Civil War is something I could foresee happening tbh but enjoyed the highlight on how journalism can shift/tell (or retell) the history of major events. The cinematography was lovely and jarring at times (in a good way). It made me also think back to my first ā€˜adult’ job ever working in news and how news has evolved so much since then.

It’s May which means it’s both Mental Health Awareness (yay therapy and healing!) and AAPI month so the focus for each category this month will be on the latter. As I wrap up this issue of the newsletter, it’s Sunday now* and I’m watching the roast of Tom Brady. IMO the funniest people thus far are Nikki Glasser and Sam Jay. For both, I was laughing so hard I had tears in my eye at times. Another diss track dropped from Drake tonight as well. How are we feeling about his response back?

See you in two weeks!

*Fun fact - I never write these in one day cause I have a life to liveee no matter how much I enjoy doing this lol

FUN

TV

Alice in Borderland (Netflix) - People find themselves in an emptied out verison of Tokyo. In order to survive you have to continue playing these often times dangerous games and no one truly knows when the BIG ā€˜game’ will actually end. TBH I enjoyed this a bit more than Squid Games.

Crash Landing on You (Netflix) - If you want to get into K-Drama’s; this is the one you have to start with. I love this show and have watched it twice now. It gives me romance, action, etc. all in one show. Give it 2-3 episodes before deciding, okay? TDLR — A South Korean heiress has a paragliding accident and lands in North Korea - and into the life of an army officer.

Heeramandi (Netflix) - I just started this but enjoying what I have watched so far. Lots of jewels, scheming and an intriguing storyline. FYI there are some Bollywood musical like moments in the show.

Movies

Monkey Man - I loved the direction/cinematography and the interweaving of Indian tradition and culture. What I expected going in vs what the movie was is a pleasant surprise. Music in the movie provides an interesting contrast to what you see on screen. It’s a reminder that when you are seeking revenge/vengeance, you can’t rush it!
